Sgt. Lynn Ray Named Officer of the Year for 2014

Gordon State College Police Sgt. Lynn Ray has been named Officer of the Year for 2014.

Ray, the supervisor for day shift, has been a member of the campus police department for 14 years. She has been in law enforcement for nearly 30 years.

"I was honored to be named Office of the Year," Ray said. "This type of law enforcement is more community based. It allows me, and the other members of the department, to interact with the campus community, especially the students, and show them that there is much more to us that just being around when someone is getting in trouble."

The decision to select Sgt. Ray for the honor wasn't hard.

"Sgt. Ray earned the Officer of the Year award because she has continued to grow in her career, education, training and additional responsibilities," said GSC Police Chief Jeff Mason. "She is deserving of the award because she never stops trying to improve, which is a great quality in a leader and police professional."

Ray lives in Lamar County with her husband and three grandchildren. She recently returned to the classroom with plans to earn a degree in criminal justice.

"I have wanted to go back to school for some time, but never got around to it," Ray explained. "Now that I have grandchildren, I want to be an example for them. I want to show them that it is never too late to fulfill your dreams, no matter what age, and that education is important."
