Gordon State College officially welcomed 230 freshmen to Highlander Nation during the annual Freshmen Convocation on Aug. 12, just ahead of the start of fall ‘24 classes.

“Freshmen, today marks the beginning of your formal journey toward graduation. Your faculty will challenge you and open your eyes to new possibilities, while the staff will be here to listen and guide you as you navigate both academic and social success,” said Dr. LaToya Stackhouse, GSC dean of students. “Remember that we are proud of you, and you can do this.”

Michal Dougherty, a human services major and president of the Student Government Association, offered incoming students advice to enrich their journey at GSC. Following Dougherty, Dr. J. Ardovini, GSC provost and vice president of academic and student affairs, delivered remarks on the significance of being officially initiated into academia and affirmed the Highlander Edge-Engaged Innovators, Dedicated Scholars, Gifted Communicators, and Ethical Leaders.

GSC President Dr. Donald J. Green led his address with a graduation charge.

“This is an exciting start, a celebration of new beginnings filled with opportunities. You’ve arrived at the perfect time,” Green said. “Your educational journey here will not only enrich your life but also set you on a path to success. Completing your degree at Gordon State will position you for opportunities and career advancements that only a college education can offer.”

The convocation celebration concluded with Shakerria Hudson, a nursing major, community leader in housing, and Gordon Orientation Leader, leading the freshmen in reciting The Stag Statement. This pledge embodies GSC's community standards of excellence, respect, responsibility, leadership, and scholarship, with students boldly declaring, 'I will graduate!'
