Academic Building Renovation Nears Completion

While Gordon State College is preparing for a new academic year, the college will celebrate the re-opening of the newly renovated academic building.

Built in 1982, the renovated building features a complete interior modification of both floors and is located on College Drive. The project was designed by Houser Walker Architect. The 28,545 square feet of classroom space, study rooms and collaborative areas were modified by Striker Construction.

Classrooms were reduced from 12 rooms to nine with three classrooms converted into an open-study area and the faculty offices were updated. A portion of classroom space on the second floor is now a study and student lounge space with underutilized labs converted to larger, more flexible lecture spaces. The interior of the building also received upgrades, including paint, carpet, and lighting. The exterior of the building did not have major alterations. Offices and classes usually held in the Academic Building, were relocated during the renovation.

The $1.6 million project was funded through small capital project funds, allowing students to access new state-of-the art equipment such as glass boards and flexible tables. The renovation project began on November 1, 2018 and is scheduled to be completed by July of 2020.
