Gordon State College Hosts GA-CTL RAC

Gordon State College welcomed more than 20 statewide developers for the Georgia
Center for Teaching and Learning Regents Advisory Committee (GA-CTL RAC) on campus for a two-day
conference last week. Dr. Denise Domizi, Director of Faculty Development for the University System of
Georgia (USG), led a special session for Gordon State College faculty before the advisory committee
convened.

The committee participated in a business meeting followed by a workshop titled “Communication
Styles: Identifying Your Own and Effectively Reaching Others,” facilitated by Wendi Jenkins, the
Leadership and Institutional Development Manager for the USG.
President Nooks addressed the committee guests and assured them they were “making a difference” across state. Gordon State’s African American Male Initiative (AAMI) and Minority Advisement Program (MAP) led a professional development session during the two-day RAC event on implicit bias and championing diversity.
The goal of the AAMI program is to increase retention and graduation rates of African American male
students through an integrated program that incorporates academic and social supports for the students.
Allowing the GSC students from AAMI to lead the workshop discussion provided students the opportunity to express needs and scenarios to the system support team in an effort to better understand and equip faculty to address and assist students.

The USG is comprised of twenty-six public colleges and universities in the state of Georgia, collectively
governed by the Board of Regents (BOR). The USG’s Consortium on Teaching and Learning (GA-CTL) was founded in 2007 and is comprised of Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) directors or representatives from the twenty-six USG institutions. The GA-CTL was established by the USG to “strengthen quality teaching and learning through the coordination of policies and programs that support faculty development across the University System of Georgia” (Bylaws, 2008). In 2018, the GA-CTL became officially recognized as a USG Regents Advisory Committee (RAC).
GA-CTL RAC supports the educational mission of the University System of Georgia (USG) by advocating
quality faculty development and strategic uses of resources that expand access, enhance student
learning, and enrich opportunities for faculty and students. Additionally, the GA-CTL serves as an
advisory body for faculty development issues, programs, policies, and proposals that have system-wide
significance and advance the USG strategic plan. The committee's purpose is to support and strengthen
quality teaching and learning through the coordination of policies, and programs that support faculty
development across the University System of Georgia.
GA-CTL aims to provide both a forum for discussion and development of faculty development
collaboration and the exchange of information about elements of good practice across USG institutions.
