The Gordon State College Theatre will present a thought provoking, adult-themed and darkly comedic look at race, rhetoric and basketball shoes with its production of HONKY.

When a young African American male is shot for a pair of basketball shoes, sales triple among white teens. Are ghetto-glorifying commercials to blame, or is it the white CEO that only sees dollar signs? Luckily, there's a new pill on the market guaranteed to cure racism.

The cast includes Donovan Dickinson as Thomas; Weston Holder as Davis; Christian Madura as Peter; Dejah Sibblies as Dr. Emilia Hodge; Kallie Earnhardt as Andie; Jayla Myers as Dr. Driscoll; Frankie Nelson as Kid 1; Amaury Rakestraw as Kid 2; Georgia Cone as Wilson; Trenton Watkins as Fredrick Douglas and James Hammack as Abraham Lincoln. Nathan Rogers is the production's understudy.

Lisa Cesnik Ferguson is directing the production and is joined by set designer Tony Pearson and costume designer Lauren Paris. Maleah Hatcher is assistant director and stage manager.

"HONKY is a thought provoking, dark comedy," said Ferguson. "We hope that this play will encourage healthy discussion about how difficult it is to communicate about the complexities of the construct of race in our society. It will make you laugh, cringe and hopefully question perspectives on this hotbed topic."

HONKY opens Wednesday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. and plays each night though Saturday. A Sunday matinee is at 2. Tickets are $5. Complementary tickets are available for Gordon State College students, faculty and staff.

HONKY, written in 2014 by Greg Kalleres, is inappropriate for anyone under the age of 17.
